Mechanical Pump Diesel Engine Operation
A mechanical pump diesel engine is a type of diesel power system that uses a mechanically driven fuel injection pump to deliver fuel into the engine cylinders. Unlike electronic systems, its operation depends mainly on mechanical parts such as the camshaft, governor, fuel pump, injectors, and a set of fuel lines. This design is known for being durable, simple, and reliable in many working conditions.The operation of a mechanical pump diesel engine begins when the engine is started by a starter motor or another starting method. Once the crankshaft begins to rotate, the pistons move up and down inside the cylinders. During the intake stroke, only air enters the cylinder. Because of this compression, the temperature inside the cylinder rises sharply.At the proper moment, the mechanical fuel injection pump sends diesel fuel through the high-pressure lines to the injectors. The injectors spray the fuel into the hot compressed air in a very fine mist. The heat of the compressed air causes the fuel to ignite automatically without a spark plug. This is called compression ignition. The burning fuel creates high-pressure gases that push the piston downward, producing power. This power is transferred through the connecting rod to the crankshaft, which turns and drives the engine’s output.The mechanical pump controls the amount and timing of fuel delivery. Its movement is usually linked to the engine speed and camshaft position. A governor helps regulate engine speed by adjusting the fuel supply according to load demand. When the load increases, the governor allows more fuel to enter the cylinders. When the load decreases, it reduces the fuel supply to prevent overspeeding. This makes the engine operate smoothly under different working conditions.Cooling and lubrication are also essential in operation. The cooling system removes excess heat from the engine block, cylinder head, and other parts. The lubrication system supplies oil to moving components such as bearings, pistons, camshaft parts, and the fuel pump mechanism. These systems reduce wear and help the engine run efficiently and last longer.Exhaust gases are expelled after combustion during the exhaust stroke. The cycle then repeats continuously as long as fuel, air, and mechanical motion are supplied.
