A mechanical pump diesel engine is a type of diesel power unit that uses a mechanically controlled fuel injection pump to deliver fuel to each cylinder. Unlike modern electronic common-rail systems, the mechanical pump relies on cams, gears, plungers, and linkages to regulate fuel quantity and injection timing. This design has been widely used for many years because of its durability, simple structure, and strong adaptability to harsh working conditions.The core principle of a diesel engine is compression ignition. Air is first drawn into the cylinder and compressed to a very high pressure. As the air is compressed, its temperature rises significantly. At the proper moment, the mechanical pump sends a measured amount of diesel fuel through the injector into the combustion chamber. The fuel atomizes and mixes with the hot compressed air, then ignites without the need for spark plugs.
