Air-Cooled Diesel Engine Crankshaft
An air-cooled diesel engine crankshaft is one of the most important rotating components in a diesel power system. Its main function is to convert the reciprocating motion of the pistons into rotational motion, which is then transferred to the flywheel and other driven parts. Because it must operate under high combustion pressure, heavy load, and continuous vibration, the crankshaft is designed with great precision and made from high-strength materials.In an air-cooled diesel engine, the crankshaft works in a harsher thermal environment than in many water-cooled engines. Since heat is removed by air rather than coolant, the engine block and surrounding parts may experience greater temperature fluctuation. For this reason, the crankshaft must maintain excellent mechanical strength, fatigue resistance, and dimensional stability during long periods of operation. It is usually manufactured from forged steel or high-grade ductile iron, then carefully machined and heat-treated to improve durability.The structure of the crankshaft includes main journals, crankpins, web arms, counterweights, and oil passages. The main journals are supported by the engine block bearings, while the crankpins connect to the connecting rods. The web arms link these sections together and provide the necessary rigidity. Counterweights are added to balance rotating forces and reduce vibration, helping the engine run more smoothly. Internal oil passages allow lubricating oil to reach the bearing surfaces, minimizing friction and wear.Precision balance is especially important for a diesel engine crankshaft. Any slight imbalance can cause noise, vibration, bearing damage, and reduced service life. Therefore, the crankshaft is typically dynamically balanced during production. Its surface, especially the journal areas, is finely ground to ensure accurate fit with bearings and to promote reliable lubrication. Some crankshafts also receive induction hardening or nitriding treatment to increase surface hardness and wear resistance.During engine operation, the crankshaft must withstand repeated torsional stress, bending force, and impact loads. Diesel combustion produces high compression and strong power pulses, so the crankshaft needs excellent toughness and crack resistance. Proper lubrication, correct bearing clearance, and regular maintenance are essential to prevent failure. If lubrication is insufficient or the engine is overloaded, the crankshaft may suffer scoring, fatigue cracks, or bending.An air-cooled diesel engine crankshaft is widely used in industrial equipment, agricultural machinery, generators, and compact power units. Its reliability directly affects engine performance, fuel efficiency, and service life.
